An immersive, magical landscape filled with monsters and spirits

Xiyue (Cici) Zhang was born in China and has been based in Lutruwita (Tasmania) for the past three years – her works have been included in exhibitions internationally, including in China, Korea, Germany and Australia. Cici’s imaginary landscapes and creatures are often fictional or exaggerated but informed by memory and experience. Cici uses watercolour, animation, traditional Chinese painting and woodblock printing to visualise her whimsical and sometimes dark storytelling. In Thomas’ Garden, these scenes come to life in an interactive, human-size underwater dreamscape — her monsters crawling out of Timtumili Minanya (River Derwent) to settle on the edge of the river for the three days of the festival.
